Since humans have existed, we have been moved by two

ultra-powerful desires, which if used correctly are keys to doing

what you need to do to get where you want to go…

  These 2 uber desires can allow us to get leverage on ourselves or others and have been used daily for thousands of years. They were used in different ways by the folks who created belief systems like Christianity,  Islam, Socialism and Capitalism that heavily influence the lives of a huge part of the population of good ole planet earth.

In the arena of professional sports and politics these 2 emotional desires are used in various forms by  top coaches and politicians. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Ronald Reagan, Obama and Tony Blair sometimes used this tool masterfully while most of the past New Orleans Saints coaches, John McCain, Jimmy Carter and Al Gore often did not seem to get it. 

So what are these basic motivational concepts you may ask that influence so much of our behavior? 

Well on a most basic level humans are moved by either avoiding Pain/Suffering or seeking Pleasure/Rewards. Of course we are talking about perceptions also so for coach potatoes exercising be percieved as painfull while for many exercise buffs not exercising regularly is percieved as painful.

Another very simplistic example of the power of this concept… in many religions, there is the Hell and Heaven concept…   In economic or political belief systems their is also a type of heaven and hell concept that is often used to demonize the opponent who would bring pain and /or “rally th troops” behind the saviour who will bring salvation, triumph or even pleasurable progress.

Some of us fall squarely into one camp or the other while others are moved by both factors to some extent depending on the situation.

People who are motivated by pleasure or reward:

  Some people live their life with the idea of the “eternal reward” or Heaven. This means that the thought of going to Heaven (pleasure) motivates them to avoid “sin” and try to be a good person.

  People who are motivated by avoiding pain or suffering:

  Other people live their life to stay away from “eternal damnation” or Hell . This means that the thought of going to Hell (pain) may motivate them to be a good person. Or outside of religion the fear of revenge of others (venganza in Spanish) if they behave badly can be a factor for others.

Since many (not all)  religions use it as a type of leverage, this principle has been a deciding factor in human behavior for thousands of years. Surprisingly this is also why goals are a great thing to have, but don’t work for many people (avoid pain or suffering people).

Answer the following questions with total honesty:

What do you really want ? ( or most enjoy…. it doesn’t have to be materialistic )

What’s important to you about doing / having…?

How would that make you feel?

And what will that allow you to do?

People who are away from percieved suffering/ pain will often answer with the following:
· financially security
· it will make life easier
· stress relief
· prevent…
· avoid…
· remove…

People who are toward percieved rewards/pleasure will often answer with the following:

· feel good 

freedom to

· make you happy
· accomplish
· attain
· include
· achieve

How to be more Persuasive:       

Self-motivation is a very powerful tool that unfortunately most people don’t have. Most people rely on external factors which won’t necessarily always be there.

People that are toward pleasure should always create goals and then find friend, family, co-workers etc. to hold them accountable to them. Doing so will allow them to keep them focus and help them be reminded and re-reminded of what they want to achieve.

Try this: Create a vision board. Cut out some pictures of the things you want and put them on piece of paper you can hang on a wall. It’s very simple and yes it works.

People who are away from pain must simply think about what they don’t want. For example, if you are thinking of not going into work today:

“If I don’t go to work, I might get fired. If I get fired, I’ll have no money. If I have no money, then I can’t pay my mortgage. If I can’t pay my mortgage, I’ll have to live on the streets. I should probably just go to work”

How to lead others

The concept obviously remains the same as if you were to do this to yourself. Scenarios of using the pain and pleasure principle on others would be:

• Employees -reward employees for working hard or warn them about what happens if you don’t
• Sales – have prospects buy your product/service for what it can do or help them buy to avoid pain or suffering (inconvenience, frustration, wasted time, hassles) that might happens if they don’t
• Kids – Tell your kids to clean up their room and do their homework so you can take them to get ice cream or if they don’t, you’ll take away their cell phone or internet surfing.

Surely you’re starting to realize the vast amount of leverage you’ll acquire by using the pain and pleasure principle.

It’s very simple to apply as long as you pay close attention to which direction the person you’re communicating with is going.  Practice by writing down the words I listed above and listen for them when you talk with someone.

I believe most human tend to explain things based on the “belief code, desire or fantasy” we have  unknowingly allowed into our brain “hard drives”. 

So here in Med Spain a common “belief code, desire or fantasy” is that “we live better than about anyone else” so the real estate bonanza was because others started to realize this truth and wanted to come live here too.

It is true many Northern Europeans want to have some winter Med sun of Spain, Italy, Greece, Croacia, Carribean ect…

But the majority of the boom here in Spain was internal consumption based on easy to get cheap loans. As most especially on the left have been in denial so long in Spain about the fact that  the last 10 years was an artificial credit based bonanaza. Without the “speculators”investing money the boom would not have happened here so now is the return to reality.

Why was the money cheap?…because the international financial markets / “finacial specualtors” are now interconnected, for good and for bad.They decided to lend money here to Spain as growth was underway and the EU made the risk much lower.

So here this leads to a thought like “of course our tiny apartment in Spain now cost 2x more than a few years ago as everyone wants to live here because we live better than everyone else ect…..

One can live very well here on many levels no doubt but as the saying goes “a strength that is overused is a weakness” like too much wine or  too much fiesta.

In the USA I think is something simlar but the because would be different

For example from living in the USA I remember some believed  ” that everyone wants to live here because….” the USA is the greatest country in the World  or because some there belief thay are harder working and/or morally superior ….because they have more Fast (Fat) Food Walmarts with cheap flat screen TV from China or something like that.

So all this just goes to show that the majortiy of humans
often make big decisions like sheep…..

Now I feel almost morally superior :->
